What is that black stuff on South Florida roofs? In almost every case, those black or dark gray streaks are not dirt, not mold, and not just aging. They're caused by a specific organism called Gloyocapsa magma. It's a type of cyanobacteria, often called blue-green algae, even though the streaks look black. The organism produces a dark protective pigment, a kind of natural sunscreen, to shield itself from Florida's intense UV rays. That dark sheath is what you see streaking down the roof. It feeds primarily on the limestone, calcium carbonate, filler that manufacturers put into most modern asphalt shingles. Once spores land and find moisture, the colony grows and rain washes it downhill, creating those classic vertical streaks. North-facing slopes and shaded areas usually get hit hardest because they stay damp longer. Why does algae grow so well on roofs here in South Florida? Florida's climate is basically a five-star resort for this stuff: year-round warmth and high humidity, frequent rain and heavy morning dew, warm temperatures that keep the algae active most of the year. Asphalt shingles that hold moisture and contain the limestone the algae likes to eat. Shade from trees, debris in the valleys, and poor drainage make it even worse. Spores travel by wind, so one roof can easily seed the next. By the time you notice the streaks, the colony has usually been growing for months. Left alone, the algae doesn't just look bad, it can hold moisture against the shingles, raise surface temperatures, which can bump up cooling costs, and gradually contribute to granulal loss and shorter roof life. How to prevent it? Prevention is a lot easier and cheaper than constant cleaning. Here's what works best in South Florida: reduce shade and moisture. Trim overhanging branches so more sunlight and air reach the roof. Clean gutters regularly so water drains properly. Clear leaves and debris that trap moisture. Choose algae-resistant materials when you replace the roof. Many modern shingles come with copper or zinc granules built in. These slowly release metal ions that discourage algae growth for years. Install zinc or copper strips. This is one of the most popular and effective add-on solutions. How zinc strips work? Zinc strips are thin metal strips installed near the ridge of the roof, usually under or just below the ridge cap. When it rains, water flows over the zinc and picks up tiny amounts of zinc ions. Those ions wash down the roof surface and create an environment that algae, moss, and similar organisms don't like. The effect is strongest closest to the strip and gradually decreases farther down the slope, typically effective for about 10 to 15 feet under good rainfall conditions. On steeper or longer roofs, additional strips lower down may be needed for full coverage. Zinc strips won't magically erase a heavy existing infestation overnight, but they significantly slow new growth and help keep a cleaned roof looking better longer. Copper strips work on the same principle and are sometimes even more potent. Installation is relatively simple for a professional roofing crew and is a common upgrade during a re-roof or as a standalone prevention measure. Other practical tips. Softwash cleaning, not high pressure washing, is the safe way to remove existing algae without damaging shingles. After cleaning, a residual treatment can help slow regrowth.
